What size screen resolution do you code for?
In general we code our pages to be around 760 pixels wide. This is for the simple reason that many people (for better or worse!) are still using monitors at resolutions or 800x600. We at Milton Media believe it is unacceptable design practice to make your viewers scroll sideways. It is extremely frustrating. Better then to design at a size that is viewable to everyone. After taking into account the "chrome" (window surrounds and menus) this width should be visible on everyone's monitor. We usually center the site too, so it moves to the center of the users monitor.
Why don't you just use auto-stretch?
There has been something of a back-lash against the use of auto-stretch tables of late. Research shows that people with very large monitors (19" and above) only tend to use a sized window to view sites anyway, and if a site was to stretch to fill this vast space it could end up looking very poor indeed. Perhaps with one paragraph stretched into one long line....nasty. Again, we'd rather your site looked right, to everyone.
Do you use tables or CSS?
We currently use a fusion of both methods, with tables providing the underlying, solid, structure of the site and CSS providing the formatting. This allows us to alter the formatting very easily (for when a client decides he wants all his text on the WHOLE site a different colour!). It also makes for leaner, faster downloading pages. We are also now building pure CSS layout sites, and believe this is the way of the future. They are however, a little more time intensive and to keep prices affordable we have adopted the hybrid approach.
Do you use Flash™?
We do not make intensive use of Flash for the simple reason of compatibility. It is of paramount importance to us that your site be viewable to the maximum amount of users. And not everyone has the Flash plugin or the desire to get it just to view your site. Research shows that Flash reduces site visitors, unless they are expecting it or have a specific need for it. We can use it however if a situation demands it. But HTML (XHTML) is simpler, faster and more viewable.
What version of HTML do you use?
We use the very latest version of HTML: XHTML 1.0 Transitional. Your pages are future proof and fully W3D compliant.
Do you test your sites on all browsers?
Yes! All of them! (i think!) That includes Internet Explorer Version 4-6, Opera, FireFox, Safari, Explorer for mac. Even NetScape (yuck).
